Key Concepts – Trigonometry

Trigonometric Ratios
\(\sin\theta = \frac{P}{H}\)

Ratios of sides in a right-angled triangle: sine, cosine, tangent, and their reciprocals.

Pythagorean Identity
\(\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1\)

The fundamental trigonometric identity derived from the Pythagorean theorem.

Tangent Identity
\(\tan\theta = \frac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta}\)

The tangent ratio expressed in terms of sine and cosine.

Secant Identity
\(1 + \tan^2\theta = \sec^2\theta\)

A key identity relating tangent and secant functions.

Arc Length
\(\ell = r\theta\)

The length of an arc is the radius multiplied by the angle in radians.

Area of Sector
\(A = \frac{1}{2} r^2\theta\)

The area of a sector is half the radius squared multiplied by the angle in radians.

Chapter 6 Frequently Asked Questions

What is trigonometry?

Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with the relationships between the angles and sides of triangles, especially right-angled triangles.

What is a radian?

A radian is the angle subtended at the center of a circle by an arc whose length is equal to the radius of the circle. One full revolution is \(2\pi\) radians.

What are the fundamental trigonometric identities?

The three fundamental identities are: \(\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1\), \(1 + \tan^2\theta = \sec^2\theta\), and \(1 + \cot^2\theta = \csc^2\theta\).

What is the difference between angle of elevation and angle of depression?

The angle of elevation is measured upwards from the horizontal line of sight to an object. The angle of depression is measured downwards from the horizontal line of sight to an object.

How do you convert degrees to radians?

Multiply the degree measure by \(\frac{\pi}{180}\). For example, \(60^\circ = 60 \times \frac{\pi}{180} = \frac{\pi}{3}\) radians.
