What this age calculator does
This tool computes your exact age from a date of birth to any chosen date (defaulting to today). It returns your age in years, months, and days โ plus total months, total weeks, total days, total hours, and total minutes for completeness. It correctly handles leap years, month-length differences, and edge cases such as being born on 29 February.
How age is calculated
Age is calculated in calendar units, not by simple division. The algorithm:
- Find the difference in years between the two dates.
- Find the difference in months (0โ11), adjusting if the day-of-month of the later date is smaller.
- Find the difference in days, adjusting for varying month lengths.
- For totals: count days precisely using UTC timestamps to avoid daylight-saving issues.
Worked examples
Example 1: Person born 15 August 2005
Calculated on 9 October 2026
- From 15 Aug 2005 to 15 Aug 2026 = 21 years exactly
- From 15 Aug 2026 to 9 Oct 2026 = 1 month, 24 days
- Result: 21 years, 1 month, 24 days
Example 2: Person born 29 February 2004
Calculated on 28 February 2025
- In non-leap years, 29 February is treated as 1 March for the purpose of age day-counting.
- From 29 Feb 2004 to 28 Feb 2025 = 20 years, 11 months, 30 days (by strict calendar rules).
- Some legal systems count this as 21 years on 28 Feb. Consult the applicable rule for official purposes.
Common uses
- Checking eligibility for school admission, board registration, or exams.
- Filling out government forms where exact age on a reference date is required.
- Determining age on a specific historical or future date.
- Calculating the age gap between two people.
- Tracking milestones (birthdays, anniversaries).
FAQ
Does this calculator handle leap years?
Yes. The calculation uses precise day counts via UTC timestamps, so leap years, 29 February birthdays, and month-length differences are handled correctly.
What is the difference between "years/months/days" and "total days"?
"Years/months/days" gives your age in calendar units (e.g., 21 years, 1 month, 24 days). "Total days" gives the exact number of days you have lived (e.g., 7,724 days), which is useful for scientific or legal contexts.
Can I calculate age on a future date?
Yes. Change the "Calculate age as of" field to any future date. The calculator will return the age you will be on that date.
Why does my age sometimes differ by one day from other calculators?
Different calculators may use different conventions for leap-day birthdays (29 February) or for timezone handling. This tool uses strict calendar arithmetic with UTC-based day counting, which matches most official calculations.
